Angelo has a habit of either forgetting his phone charger, or forgetting to charge his phone, so he’s left with a dead phone and no way to charge it. For Angelo’s birthday this year, I got him the Solar Phone Charger from USB Geek, so that he had the ability to charge his phone anywhere so long as it’s not raining.

It includes:

AC Power

Car Charger

USB Charger

Built-in Lithium Battery that can be charged with solar power

And supports multi-voltage output so it can charge most phones

The price wasn’t bad at all either, for only $32.

I like the fact that this can be used for multiple phones, so if I ever need to use it as well, I can. I like that it can use various resources to charge with, so I don’t have 3 separate chargers (meaning less plastic waste) and he and I can share this one.

I am in the market for a new pair of sunglasses. Snow will be coming soon, and the glare of the sun off of so much white can be killer when driving to and from work.

However I am not interested in contributing to the unethical waste of plastic or metal sunglasses, that almost all seem to be prone to.

I did discover iWood Eco-Friendly Wooden Sunglasses which actually look pretty snazzy. However, at $350 a pop, they are certainly out of my budget, as well as most consumers I would imagine. Disappointing.

Despite the fact I would love to have wooden sunglasses, I did run across Equation LLC. which claims to have 100% recycled and reconditioned sunglasses, and at a much more reasonable price. So until a sane manufacturer creates a set of wooden sunglasses for normal consumers, no wooden sunglasses for me.

While trying to gather information on environmentally sound Televisions for our readers, I happened upon an article. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I thought I would highlight some of the pertinent information and provide a link to the article below. As we all know, buying a television can be quite a big decision and quite an investment. Hopefully this will help in the effort to include the environment as part of that decision making process.

For instance, did you know this? I certainly didn’t…

“Standby Power Consumption is what ENERGY STAR uses to rate TVs today. This is the energy your TV uses while it is just sitting there during the day. It is the lowest power consumption mode that cannot be switched OFF by a homeowner. To qualify for ENERGY STAR a television must not exceed 1 watt of power consumption in Standby Mode. The Department of Energy says, that Standby power consumption of an ENERGY STAR compliant TV uses about 30% less energy than standard sets.

As of today, there is NOT an ENERGY STAR rating for On Mode Power Consumption. On Mode is the one we are probably most aware of…you know, this is the mode our kids like to use when they leave their rooms and run outside. In September 2008, ENERGY STAR will produce ratings for television On Mode power consumption (this is really great). Right now it looks like a 37″ LCD like the ones we present below, would be allowed to consume no more than 190W of On Mode power – estimate.

Today, don’t let an ENERGY STAR logo fool you. This is only a logo for Standby Mode. How misleading can this be? Well, the most efficient television on the ENERGY STAR list is from Hewlett-Packard (HP) with a Standby Mode consumption of 0.3W, but in On Mode this TV consumes 220W – the highest consumption device on the list! Not good.”

Find out how they ranked…

I ordered an organic toilet brush from Greenfeet.com which I finally used for the first time with much success. The brush itself is made from coconut fibers, which are said to clean better than synthetic fibers, and the handle is made of wood, making it 100% biodegradable.

What annoyed me the most about conventional brushes, beyond the material they are made from, is the heads were too big to fit down the hole of the commode. This new organic brush is smaller and fits perfectly, ensuring complete access to all visible portions of my toilet.

It is infinitely better than those ridiculous disposable brushes that do nothing but add waste to landfills.

This non-traditional design (made for righties and lefties) not only helps you brush better, but the handle is made from renewable resource plastic. Radius also makes a toothbrush line for children.

Radius Source Toothbrush. The Source toothbrush comes with a replaceable head. After all, when you get a new toothbrush, all you really want to do is change out the bristles. The reusable handle is made from a wood fiber blended with corn plastic – both renewable resource materials.

The manufacturing of Radius toothbrushes is also eco-friendly. They are made in a restored mill in Pennsylvania, using well designed, efficient processes that create less waste and save on water and energy use (although much of the production is down at the moment, after the mill suffered severe storm damage in July).

3. Preserve

The Preserve Toothbrush was developed with dental professionals over a two-year period and represents the latest in toothbrush design and function. It is constructed with environmentally friendly materials to let you replace without the waste. The Preserve is available at natural food supermarkets such as Whole Foods Market, Wild Oats, and Trader Joe’s.

The Preserve’s handle is made of polypropylene. This plastic material was chosen for its strength and flexibility. It is an efficiently recycled material–its strength does not break down in the recycling process. Polypropylene’s recycling efficiency means it is commonly reprocessed and cleaned, and we have been able to hire the best in the business to recycle our plastics.

Presently our main source is from recycled Stonyfield Farm® yogurt cups.

Fuchs Ekotek Toothbrush The Ekotek comes with 3 recyclable heads on its own and prevents excess waste from going into landfills like the others.

Eco-Tip: To clean your tooth-brush, soak it in vinegar every two weeks to kill bacteria and germs.
